Greene powers Jets to 35-9 runaway over Colts

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? Shonn Greene hit the ground running ? and just kept going.

Rex Ryan's "Ground-and-Pound" offense returned in a big way Sunday as Greene ran for a career-high 161 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries to power the New York Jets to a 35-9 rout of Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

"When you're running the ball that well," quarterback Mark Sanchez said, "you never want to stop."

Just about everything worked for the Jets as they rolled up 252 yards on the ground after struggling in the running game for weeks, Sanchez was solid and Tim Tebow made a few big plays. Even the Jets' maligned defense was able to shut down Luck and the Colts as New York snapped a two-game slide at home that had many wondering if the season was about to spiral out of control.

"We want to be a team no one wants to play," Ryan said. "And, we're on our way."

For a week, at least, Sanchez was in total control and the Jets (3-3) had their best overall performance ? save for a handful of personal foul penalties ? since an opening rout of Buffalo. After four straight games with less than 50 percent completion percentage, Sanchez finished 11 of 18 for just 82 yards, but had touchdown throws to Stephen Hill and Jason Hill.

"Wins come in all shapes and forms," Sanchez said. "I was proud of the way we were able to run the ball."

With the way the Jets, particularly Greene, performed behind an offensive line blasting open holes to run through, Sanchez didn't need to air it out.

"I think we can do it every week against any team," Greene said. "It's just a matter of us executing, not stopping ourselves and working hard during the week."

The frustrating thing for Indianapolis (2-3) was that New York did exactly what it expected. And the Colts still couldn't do anything about the running game.

"We wanted Sanchez to have to beat us with his arm," cornerback Jerraud Powers said. "If we stopped the run, that was what they were going to have to do. Whoever we play next week, that's what they're going to do. They're going to run the ball until we stop it."

Indianapolis trailed 21-6 at halftime and couldn't erase a big deficit for the second straight week after coming back from 18 points and beating Green Bay last Sunday for Bruce Arians' first win while filling in for Chuck Pagano, hospitalized while being treated for leukemia.

Luck finished 22 of 44 for 280 yards, two interceptions and a lost fumble on a day he misfired a handful of times. Luck was driving the Colts a possible touchdown with less than 7 minutes left, but Ellis Lankster ended that when he intercepted the rookie's toss for Donnie Avery in the end zone.

"It's learning how to be consistent, and that's something I've struggled with," Luck said. "I think I played very poorly this week after a decent half of football last weekend. As a team, we have to learn to come out and consistently be good."

The Colts were missing sacks leader Robert Mathis, and lost defensive end Cory Redding to an injured right knee in the first quarter. Indianapolis was also without leading rusher Donald Brown; replacement Vick Ballard had just 25 yards in his first NFL start.

Tebow helped the Jets take a 21-6 lead just before halftime on a drive kept alive by some trickery. On fourth-and-11 from the Colts 40, the do-it-all backup quarterback ? lined up as the punt protector ? took the direct snap, stepped forward and tossed a jump pass to linebacker Nick Bellore, who rumbled 23 yards as the crowd at MetLife Stadium went wild.

Three plays later, Tebow was at quarterback and ran 3 yards for a first down, setting up Sanchez's 5-yard TD toss to Jason Hill with 27 seconds left. Tebow met Sanchez as he ran toward the sideline and the two leaped and bumped hips to celebrate the score.

"We were very efficient, effective," Tebow said. "We had some big runs, threw the ball really well in the red area and converted on third down. It was a pretty good day for us."

Greene made it 28-6 late in the third quarter on a 4-yard spin-and-run on a drive sparked by Joe McKnight's 61-yard run that gave the Jets the ball at Indianapolis 6. McKnight injured his left ankle on the play, three plays after Bilal Powell was lost with a shoulder injury.

Both McKnight and Powell were scheduled to have MRI exams Monday.

Greene got the touchdown hat trick with a 2-yard run with 1:05 left, a few minutes after Muhammad Wilkerson forced a fumble on a sack of Luck and David Harris recovered at the Colts 14.

"If you can't block and you can't tackle, you can't win," Arians said. "It's fundamentals, things we identified going into the game: fake punts, stopping the run, protecting the quarterback. Red zone offense and defense were keys to the game. We didn't win in any of those areas."

NOTES: Jets CB Antonio Cromartie had two interceptions for TDs called back ? one on a personal foul penalty on Aaron Maybin and another on a pass interference call on Cromartie. ... Jets first-rounder Quinton Coples had 1? sacks, his first. ... The Colts were 3 of 11 on third downs, while the Jets were 6 of 12.

When Should I Have Sex, Respect & First Time Sex, Relationship ...

Saturday, October 13, 2012 by Gurl

The lovely ladies from ChickRX, a new hotspot online for expert advice on getting happy, healthy and hot have expert answers to your questions. The ChickRX ladies are going to have their experts answer one of your health questions every week. Just leave yours in the comments and yours could be next week?s question.

Is there any evidence that guys respect girls more when sex is put off?

ChickRx expert Evelyn Resh, Certified Sexuality Counselor and Nurse Midwife says?

I don?t know of any reliable research on whether or not guys respect girls more when sex is delayed. In general though, guys and girls are more likely to respect themselves and their partners when they each speak up for what they want and what they don?t want, sex included.

We often jump to the conclusion that all guys want to have sex without even asking them how they feel. The fact is that there are just as many guys out there as there are girls who feel nervous, fearful and who would prefer to wait on sex than we might realize. There is a feeling in our culture now that once you?ve openly identified that you?re romantically interested in someone, this means that you have sex with them soon after. My professional experience has taught me that this isn?t always the case or the best plan.

Sex complicates things. Sometimes, after a month or so of dating you might decide that they simply aren?t who you thought they were and your interest isn?t there anymore. If you have already had sex with them, this is much harder to manage than if sex hadn?t been part of the relationship in the first place. Once you make the decision to have sex with someone, the stakes for attachment, a broken heart, complicated misunderstandings and maybe a lost friendship are much higher.

I think there?s a lot to be said for being super sure of your decision to have sex before you do it. And if you?re wondering whether the guy is going to respect you or not, it?s sounding like you?re not quite sure yet. So, why not wait until you are?

Do you think guys lose respect for girls they sleep with? Do you speak up for yourself between the sheets? Let me know in the comments.

House-size asteroid zips by Earth on Friday

An asteroid the size of a house will buzz Earth Friday, but poses no risk of hitting our planet, scientists say.

The asteroid 2012 TC4 will pass Earth at a range of just 59,000 miles ? about one-fourth the distance to the moon ? when it makes its closest point today, NASA scientists said. The asteroid was discovered by astronomers on Oct. 4 and is about 56 feet across.

"Small asteroid 2012 TC4 will safely pass Earth Oct 12 at just .25 the distance to our moon's orbit," scientists with NASA's Asteroid Watch program wrote in a Twitter update this week. On average, the moon's orbit is about 238,000 miles.

    3. Shuttle Endeavour is new L.A. 'star'
    4. Astronomers spot huge 'diamond planet'

The asteroid is large enough to be seen by backyard astronomers using a small telescope, the night sky events website Spaceweather.com has reported.

Near-Earth flybys of small asteroids like 2012 TC4 pass inside the orbit of the moon fairly often, Asteroid Watch scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., explained.

On Oct. 7, the 100-foot-wide asteroid 2012 TV also passed inside the moon's orbit, missing Earth by about 158,000 miles.

NASA scientists and astronomers regularly watch the skies for potentially dangerous asteroids that could pose and impact threat to Earth. In fact, by a fluke of timing, a group of asteroid hunters announced Thursday that it is on track for a 2017 launch of a private space telescope dedicated to seeking out potentially dangerous space rocks.

Officials with the B16 Foundation said their plan to launch the Sentinel Space Telescope to scan for near-Earth asteroids has passed a major review milestone. The new space telescope is designed to search for asteroids from an observation spot near the orbit of Venus.

In September 2011, NASA announced that its surveys had found about 90 percent of the largest asteroids that could post a threat ? space rocks the size of a mountain or bigger.

Asteroid 2012 TC4 is too small to pose a risk to Earth. Past estimates by astronomers said that an asteroid about 460 feet wide would cause widespread damage on the planet.

Global Leadership Conference 2012: Insights and Takeaways ...

Some fascinating insights at the Global Leadership Conference at the Ronald Reagan Building today from corporate and diplomatic leaders, Jay Johnson, Chairman and CEO of General Dynamics, Frederick Smith, the CEO of FedEX, Jim Clifton, Chairman and CEO of Gallup, David Rubinstein of the Carlyle Group, the Ambassador of India Her Excellency, Nirupama Rao, and His Excellency Yousef Al Otaiba, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates. The Summit was sponsored by the Meridian International Center in partnership with Gallup and the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.

The takeaway: The world will not remain the same as it has been. According to General Dynamics CEO Jay Johnson , in coming decades, change will be the only constant and the United States cannot afford to be isolated if it wants to remain a major player on the world stage but must continue to collaborate with other countries in order to remain competitive in a globalized world threatened by pandemics, terrorism and climate change. Leadership, said the former naval commander, must be based on achieving positive outcomes, not war. Instead of individual navies patrolling the seas, Johnson, himself an Admiral, forsees a network of maritime partners around the world which would collaborate to achieve maritime security.

Gallup, no longer simply conducts polls to determine the winners of US elections, but now has 40 offices worldwide which work to predict the rise and fall of leaders and countries. Said Jim Clifton, Gallup CEO, World trade is now at $60 Trillion but according to economists, will rise to $140 trillion in the next three decades. Which countries will rise? Follow the money. The answer as to which countries will succeed he says, is where the $140 trillion goes. Gallup finds that the most important predictor of economic success or failure of a nation/state is the state of mind and the will of their populations. The best way to predict a rise or loss of GDP and who will rise and fall in the future is hope, whether a country is struggling and crashing, or hopeful and thriving. Tunisia?s GDP, for example may be up 5-6% but the Tunisians? sense of ?thriving? is crashing. Clifton said leaders will rise or fall based on their understanding of the wills of their people. For example, Rwanda may not be the safest place on earth, but Rwandans? state of mind is that it is safe. Why? ?Because it?s better than it used to be. ? In Ethiopia women used to worry about walking to market out of fear of being raped, but since the authorities established law and order, women feel safe, can go to market and GDP has risen. What used to drive the American dream has also changed Clifton said. For almost the last century the American Dream has been based on peace and having a good roof over one?s head. Now he says the American Dream is based on having a ?good job.? All decisions people now make is based on jobs.

What the entire global population, not just the US population, wants right now, said Clifton, is job growth, food and shelter and law and order. The global population is now at 7 billion adults. Three billion of them want good jobs. They don?t want ?informal jobs,? but rather full time 30 hr/week jobs. But there are only 2 billion real jobs in the world, so more jobs need to be created.

Strong Minnesota economy requires sound investments | Minnesota ...

Time to get back to what works
For prosperity to be widespread and Minnesota to compete in the global economy, our leaders have to move beyond gimmicks and short-term fixes. We need to support the state?s priorities for the long term.

Minnesota faces significant gaps between public needs and the resources it takes to meet them. Over a decade and a half, frequent budget shortfalls have been the norm. Two recessions, including the deepest economic downturn the country has seen since the Great Depression, are only part of the reason. Another important cause is the over-reliance on short-term maneuvers that kick the can down the road instead of putting Minnesota on a firm financial footing.

When the Legislature convenes in January, the top job will be to pass a budget for the next two-year cycle that starts on July 1, 2013. The $1.1 billion revenue shortfall the state projects is just the tip of the iceberg. Simply keeping up with inflation adds another $1.1 billion. Then there?s the $2.4 billion needed to fully reverse the school payment shifts used in recent years to balance the budget.

Year after year of deep cuts in critical services also means that Minnesota is failing to invest in our future prosperity. Here are just two examples of how:

  • Although there are more than 23,000 additional students in our public colleges and universities, the State of Minnesota spends less on higher education than it did 10 years ago, and tuition has risen substantially. Minnesota needs more college-educated people to meet the job requirements of the future, but we?re making it hard for many to afford that education.
  • Nearly 7,300 Minnesota families are on waiting lists for assistance that would help them afford early childhood education essential to making sure all kids start school ready to achieve.

Let?s Share Responsibility for Supporting Crucial Services
Our outdated state tax system isn?t meeting Minnesota?s needs. All Minnesotans benefit when we invest in our future prosperity, with all Minnesotans sharing the responsibility.

But today that responsibility is not evenly shared. For example, a Minnesota household making over $429,354 pays 9.7 percent of its income in state and local taxes, while a middle-income household making $53,315 to $68,696 pays 12.1 percent.

We can narrow that gap. Relying more on the state income tax ? which is based on ability to pay ? would ensure that all Minnesotans are paying their fair share.

Common sense choices made Minnesota a great place to live, work and raise a family. But we?ve gotten away from that. A balanced approach that includes revenues ? instead of the current cuts-only approach that threatens Minnesota?s economic future ? will put us back on the right path.

(We published this brief last week and thought it was important to share with our blog readers)

ESL Podcast Blog ? Blog Archive ? Fake Online Reviews

In the old days, if we wanted to get a recommendation for something, we would talk to our friends and acquaintances (people we know, but not well). These days, we go to the Internet. If you want to know about a business before you visit or about a product before you buy, you may look at online reviews, written opinions posted on the Internet.

Online reviews have become a huge influence in the global marketplace (world of buying and selling). Good or bad reviews, for example, can make or break (make successful or unsuccessful) a new restaurant, product, or hotel. It?s not unusual for businesses to post positive reviews about their own business, and even write unfavorable (negative) ones about their competitors (business competing for the same customers). The savvy?(knowledgeable) customer knows that this happens and ignores a certain number of glowing (very positive) or very negative reviews.

Weighing (deciding what is useful and what isn?t) online reviews has become harder, however, because writing fake (false; untrue)?online reviews has become?a business. There are now companies?that a book author (writer) or business owner can pay to get fake positive reviews. One company will give you 20 positive reviews for about $500 and 50 reviews for $1000.

Major online sellers do try to spot (find) fake reviews by doing linguistic (related to language) analysis. For example, if the same string of words (words in the same order) appear in multiple reviews, that?s a dead giveaway?(an easy way to tell). If an anonymous (without showing one?s real identity) reviewer only writes one glowing review, that may also be a fake review.

A recent National Public Radio story gave some tips on how to spot fake reviews. Some of these suggestions are fairly obvious (clear; apparent), but may be useful as a reminder.

  1. Don?t just look at the reviews on one site. Look for the same product or business on different websites.
  2. Many sites give special status to people who are longtime reviewers or who are verified (confirmed to be real). Their reviews are more trustworthy (reliable) than anonymous ones.
  3. Don?t pay as much attention to how many stars a business gets. Instead, look for specific information about a visitor?s experience.
  4. Read reviews for specific, helpful information that fake review writers or business owners might not think of, such as how late the swimming pool stays open at a hotel.
  5. Pay attention to what the majority of reviews say, rather than outliers (an opinion that is very different from the majority).

Do you read online reviews, and if so, for what types of products, services, or businesses? In your opinion, what are good tip-offs (pieces of evidence) of a fake review?

Did Lioness Really Befriend Baby Antelope?

While documenting a lion hunt in Uganda recently, a photographer came across a surprising sight: a lioness seeming to "adopt" a baby antelope after killing and eating its mother.

In photographer Adri De?Visser's photo series of?the incident, which has been reproduced all over the Web in recent days, the lioness nuzzles the tiny, orphaned calf, picks it up by the scruff of its neck and hauls it off "like one of her own cubs," as the Daily Mail put it. According to many media outlets, the lioness's maternal instincts kicked in when confronted with the poor, defenseless youngster.

But is that really what happened?

Far from it. Everybody likes a good story about a lion lying down with a lamb. But in nature, "the lamb always gets eaten," said ecologist Craig Packer, director of the Lion Research Center at the University of Minnesota. "It's quite common for cats to play with their prey and they can look very gentle doing it. But it always ends in tears," he said.

According to Packer, the scene depicted in the photos is familiar to anyone who has studied lions, and to anyone who has ever watched their cat catch a mouse. "These are just variations on the theme of cat-and-mouse, where cats capture their prey and play with it until they either get bored and leave it or get hungry and eat it," he told Life's Little Mysteries.

Lions and other large cats can be surprisingly gentle when playing with young, feeble prey, he noted, but only in order to keep the creature alive and prolong the game of cat-and-mouse. [What Would Happen If a Lion Fought a Tiger?]

Despite being in danger, the baby kob (a type of antelope) in the photos doesn't try to escape the lion. Packer explained that its flight instinct hasn't kicked in yet. Like baby impalas and gazelles, baby kobs are "hiders." While their mothers graze, they hide in the underbrush, staying still and docile to minimize their chance of detection. "So, when they are detected, they just kind of stand around," Packer said. "They don't know how to run away. When they see the lion, they are responding to the presence of a large, warm body."

Perhaps, in this case, the lioness eventually killed and ate the baby kob. Perhaps she got bored before she got hungry, and let the creature wander off and starve to death. "Nobody follows these things so persistently that they can tell you what happens at the end of the encounter," Packer said. "But either way, nature is not 'The Lion King,' with the warthog and all that. This story ended."

FitnessJobs.com: Health and Fitness Career Opportunities are ...

?

The health, fitness, recreation and spa industry is a booming industry. Jobs are plentiful in all segments with lots of great perks. What?s wrong with working at a job where you get a free health club membership, discounts on food, retail products and spa services?? How about other great perks like socializing with men and women, meeting business owners and leaders, and having a wide variety of hours to work? (Health clubs are open a lot of hours, 7 days a week). One of the greatest perks is being able to conveniently improve your fitness level. Either before work, after work or in many cases during your lunch or dinner breaks if you are a full-time employee.? If the job is just a part-time or temporary job while seeking a more suitable position based on your education and experience, you can get in great shape while reducing the stress of being underemployed. Also, many health club career opportunities don?t require college degrees. Full-time positions such as: Front desk/customer service management, membership sales, membership director, caf? manager, spa coordinators and spa managers, childcare supervisor, group exercise coordinator, club manager and maintenance director most often don?t require a degree. So what?s the best way to get a job in a health club? First, like any job, you want to make sure you are working for a well-respected organization. Put together a list of clubs you?d like to work for that are in a close proximity of your home or office if it?s a part-time job. Who is 2012 Nobel Literature winner Mo Yan? | Firstpost

The Nobel committee just announced that Chinese author Mo Yan is the recipient of the 2012 Nobel prize for literature.

Mo Yan which means ?don?t speak? is the pen name of Guan Moye. Time magazine described his work as having ?tackled China?s tumultuous past century with a mix of magical realism and sharp-eyed satire that has made him one of the most famous, oft-banned and widely pirated of all Chinese writers.?

His work is said to be predominantly social commentary, and he is reportedly strongly influenced by the political critique of Lu Xun and the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Mo was widely tipped to be the winner of the literature award, although he faced strong competition from Japan?s Haruki Murakami.

Speculation of Mo being among the top candidates had drawn much attention and caused much excitement among some Chinese, said a report in Chinese daily, The Global Times.

?For over 100 years, the names of Chinese authors have been absent from the list of winners for the Nobel Prize in Literature,? it said.

The daily quickly added that the ?prize for 2000 was awarded to Gao Xingjian, a French-Chinese dissident writer who left China in 1987. But Gao, whose works were criticized by some as favoring the West and catering to Western values, was greatly controversial domestically?.

?Mo, however, is one of the most widely read writers in China and is a typical Chinese author in the traditional sense. His works reflect a vivid and real grass-roots China,? it said.

Mo once said?that there are three major features in his works: extraordinary characters; language with absurd local flavor (or somewhat black humor of the absurd); and plots with symbolic meaning.

?For a creative writer, books? are not the most crucial thing. The most crucial things are inspiration, the imagination, and life experience,? Mo said.

He is ?best known for his novel Red Sorghum which was turned into a prizewinning 1987 movie by director Zhang Yimou and picked by Chinese readers in a 1996 poll as their favorite novel. According to the Wikipedia online encyclopaedia,?Mo Yan has published dozens of short stories and novels in Chinese. His first novel was?Falling Rain on a Spring Night, published in 1981. Several of his novels have been translated into English by?Howard Goldblatt, professor of?East Asian languagesand literatures at the?University of Notre Dame. (Read more)

Extremely prolific, Mo Yan wrote his latest novel, Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out in only 43 days. He composed more than 500,000 characters contained in the original manuscript on traditional Chinese paper using only ink and a writing brush.

Aides: Israel's ex-PM Olmert considering comeback

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is considering a political comeback to challenge incumbent Benjamin Netanyahu in the upcoming elections, aides said Wednesday.

With new parliamentary elections set for early 2013, Olmert is considered the candidate with the best chance of unseating Netanyahu at the ballot box, despite a precarious legal situation that may stand in his way if he gets elected.

Olmert was recently cleared of the most serious of several bribery allegations that forced him out of office in 2009 but is still bogged down in a separate bribery trial that leaves his political future in doubt.

Olmert was deeply unpopular while in office, but he has enjoyed a revival in recent months, with many fearing he was unfairly removed from office for allegations that ultimately did not stand up in court.

Commentators have also lamented the breakdown in Mideast peace efforts under Netanyahu and wondered whether Olmert, who conducted more than a year of intense negotiations with the Palestinians, might have delivered an agreement if he had not been driven from power.

"I can tell you that he is pondering it and the political system is putting a lot of pressure on him," his former Cabinet secretary and confidante Yisrael Maimon told Israel's Army Radio station.

With Netanyahu's hawkish Likud party far ahead in the polls, Israel's centrist and leftist parties are desperate for a candidate who can unite the fragmented and leaderless opposition parties under an umbrella that can mount a serious challenge.

Analysts predict Olmert is the only candidate who could prevent Netanyahu from a sweeping re-election. Since he stepped down, his Kadima Party has seen its public support evaporate without him.

Former Cabinet Minister and close Olmert friend Haim Ramon is leading the effort to create a new centrist bloc. Ramon confirmed he had reached out to the former prime minister about heading it.

"I am talking to Ehud Olmert. He has obviously not made his decisions and we need to wait patiently," he told Army Radio.

Olmert was forced out of office nearly four years ago under the cloud of scandal, accused of accepting cash-stuffed envelopes from an American political supporter and allegedly double billing supporters for overseas trips. In July, the court cleared him of those serious allegations, convicting him only on the lesser charge of breach of trust for helping allocate government contracts to a friend's associates. He is still engaged in a separate trial for his alleged role in a Jerusalem real estate bribery case.

His legal trouble leaves his political prospects in limbo.

Emanuel Gross, a legal analyst at the University of Haifa, said Olmert was technically clear to run for office and serve as a lawmaker since the court did not sentence him to jail time or rule that he bears moral turpitude for his actions.

But the later ruling could be appealed in court, he said, and so long as he was entangled in an ongoing trial he was barred from serving as a minister or a prime minister.

"He can head a party," Gross said. "But if that party wins it's not certain that he can head the government."

On Tuesday night, Netanyahu ordered the new parliamentary elections, roughly eight months ahead of schedule.

The immediate reason for the snap elections was the coalition's inability to pass a 2013 budget by a Dec. 31 deadline. But Netanyahu has long been rumored to be leaning toward elections, given his high standings in opinion polls, the lack of a clear rival and fears the economy could weaken next year.

Analysts say Olmert's predicament likely weighed heavily in Netanyahu's decision.

"Don't pay attention to the media spins, it's not the budget, it's not Romney and it isn't Iran. What is driving Netanyahu to the polling stations at almost hysterical speed is Ehud Olmert," columnist Ben Caspit wrote in Wednesday's Maariv daily.

"He knows that the only one who can give him a real fight, as an equal, with an actual chance, is Olmert," Caspit said. "Netanyahu is a strong prime minister and if he really wanted he could pass a budget. But he doesn't really want to. What he wants is to pre-empt Olmert's comeback, catch his opponents off guard and steal a new term before it's too late."

Atlanta Archdiocese Prohibits Giving to Komen - Philanthropy Today ...

The Archdiocese of Atlanta has told all its affiliated institutions to stop supporting Susan G. Komen for the Cure, reports The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

In an October 1 memo, the archdiocese, which represents about 1 million Catholics in northern Georgia, criticized some Komen affiliates? grants to Planned Parenthood because that nonprofit offers abortion services. The memo called any donations or volunteer efforts intended to benefit Komen ?an occasion for scandal.?

In a statement, the Atlanta Komen affiliate denied it had ever given financial support to Planned Parenthood Southeast. ?Komen Atlanta remains committed to ensuring that all women, especially the underserved, in our community have access to lifesaving breast cancer screening and support services,? the statement said. ?Any decrease in support directly impacts our ability to serve these women.?

Komen found itself involved in controversy earlier this year when its national office first ceased, and then restored, grants to Planned Parenthood for breast-cancer screening programs. Some of the anti-cancer charity?s affiliates have reported fund-raising declines this year.

Scientists discover gene 'bursting' plays key role in protein production

ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2012) ? Scientists at the Gladstone Institutes have mapped the precise frequency by which genes get turned on across the human genome, providing new insight into the most fundamental of cellular processes -- and revealing new clues as to what happens when this process goes awry.

In a study being published this week online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Gladstone Investigator Leor Weinberger, PhD, and his research team describe how a gene's on-and-off switching -- called "bursting" -- is the predominant method by which genes make proteins. By gaining an understanding of this underlying mechanism, this discovery has the potential to vastly help researchers learn what happens at the molecular level when this mechanism is disrupted -- such as in cancer or when exposed to a particular drug.

The manufacture, or synthesis, of proteins takes place inside every cell. DNA and genes -- which house the instructions for making proteins -- are stored within the nucleus of each cell. When a gene is switched on, those instructions are transcribed as a copy onto RNA, another type of genetic material that then directs the protein synthesis. Proteins perform a variety of functions within the cell -- from the breaking down and digesting fats to resisting foreign invaders, such as bacteria or viruses. The timing and frequency with which a particular protein is synthesized is crucial to maintaining the health of the cell.

"Much like flicking on a light switch, genes get 'switched on' at specific intervals to initiate the fundamental biological process of protein synthesis," said Dr. Weinberger, who is also an associate professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), with which Gladstone is affiliated. "Until recently, the process was thought to be continuous -- once a gene is switched on, it stays on, churning out protein products at a steady pace like a garden hose. But recently, some studies have suggested the opposite -- that DNA produces RNA molecules in rapid-fire 'staccato' bursts. We decided to investigate how common this rapid-fire bursting was across the genome."

In laboratory experiments, Dr. Weinberger and his team inserted a green fluorescent protein, or "vector," into the DNA of Jurkat T lymphocytes -- a type of white blood cell that helps maintain a healthy human immune system. From this they generated new cells in which the vector was integrated into any one of thousands of gene segments -- with each segment glowing green when it was activated, or "switched on." This allowed the researchers to see exactly how gene activation occurred across the entire human genome.

"Our analysis reveals support for the "bursting" hypothesis -- the genes acted as a sort of strobe light -- transcribing RNA in rapid-fire bursts," said Roy Dar, PhD, a Gladstone postdoctoral fellow and one of the paper's lead authors. "We observed that the bursting frequency increases until, over time, it reaches a particular threshold. At that point higher protein levels are reached by increasing the size of the bursts, eventually coming to a halt when no more protein product is needed. These results are a huge step towards understanding the basic molecular mechanism behind gene regulation."

"Dr. Weinberger and colleagues have shown that there is a single rule governing the behavior of all genes in the genome. Their findings in human cells complement and extend similar findings made recently in other organisms," said Arjun Raj, PhD, assistant professor of bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania and an expert in imaging single molecules within cells.

The team believes that this new-found understanding of this fundamental biological process -- that genomic bursts account for the majority of instances of protein production -- holds clues to discovering how the disruption of these bursts could be harmful.

"For example, in certain cancers, genes may be switched on at the wrong times, eventually leading to the formation of tumors," said Brandon Razooky, a Gladstone and UCSF graduate student and the paper's other lead author. "This is also a good example of how the basic science being performed here at Gladstone provides a solid foundation with which to prevent, treat and ultimately cure some of the world's most devastating diseases."

Michael Simpson, PhD, from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, is also a senior author on this paper. Funding came from a variety of sources, including the NIH Director's Common Fund Program (through the NIH Director's New Innovator Award Program), the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program, the US Department of Energy, the Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Television ads are often prohibitively expensive for small businesses to produce and air. Magazine and radio ads are less expensive but still require a sizeable investment when part of an ongoing campaign. Although you can spend a lot of money on an Internet campaign, there are many ways to leverage the Internet and gain free advertising for your business. Following are 20 ideas to consider.

  1. Increase your visibility on search engines:?Insert keywords that describe your business into the HTML < META > tags on your Web site pages. Repeat these keywords in the text of your Web site?s homepage. Strategic use of keywords can put your business name at the top of customers? search results. For more information, see our article ?Optimizing Your Site for Search Engines and Directories?.
  2. Put your URL on everything:?Maximize your advertising efforts by listing your Web site address on everything you do. Print the URL on your company?s letterhead, on your business cards, on the front of your building or the door to your office suite. Use the URL in your e-mail signature. List the URL on any print advertising that you do, including phone books, brochures, flyers, and direct mail pieces.
  3. Submit your site to every directory, specialty listing, industry organization, and yellow pages you can find:?No matter what industry your business is in, there are online directories, such as Yahoo! Yellow Pages, that you should register with. Many business and industry associations allow you to list your business on their Web site. In addition, there are individuals who maintain popular lists of resources; use Web search engines to find these lists, and then create an entry for your business.
  4. Utilize evangelists:?Channel the energy of your most enthusiastic staff and encourage them to promote your company?s product as they surf the Web.
  5. Blogs:?A Weblog, or?blog, is a collection of short articles, essays, or loosely-formatted thoughts, usually written by one individual. Since the 2004 U.S. presidential election, blogs have become extremely popular as both a medium to get your message out and a vehicle for paid advertising. Blogs also encourage reader comments, making them a valuable tool for gathering customer feedback. Companies such as Blogger (www.blogger.com) will host your blog for free. You can also install a blog on your own Web site with free software such as MediaWiki (http://wikipedia.sourceforge.net).

The software to create podcasts is free; for more information visit?www.podcastingnews.com.
  7. Join online communities:?No matter what the topic, there are thousands of people discussing it passionately on the Internet. By contributing to these discussion groups, you can inform your customers and advertise your business..

  18. Excellent customer service:?There?s no advertising like personal recommendations made between friends and family. The best way to encourage this type of ?viral marketing? is to provide excellent customer service. Take the time to properly train and motivate your sales people and do what is necessary to satisfy your customers? needs.
  19. Business alliances and partnerships:?Build partnerships with businesses that offer complementary products and services, and then promote each other. Make joint press statements about your industry, your partnership, and your products and services. Make sure your partners provide links from their Web sites to yours.
  20. Ezine:?Write an e-mail newsletter, called an?ezine, with articles about your industry, your products and services, and related news of interest to your customers. Check out sources such as goarticles.com and ezinearticles.com, which provide free articles you can use in your ezine. Advertise your ezine for free with directory sites such as www.ezine-dir.com.
Not all these ideas may be appropriate for your business. The important thing is to think creatively and experiment.
