Tornado Recovery at Halfway Point

Reported by: Gretchen Bolander

Joplin, MO- The transition to a new year also marks the halfway point in the tornado recovery effort. Joplin residents have taken out building permits to replace half of the homes damaged or destroyed in the May 22nd storm. With about 7,500 homes impacted - that means more than 3,700 are in the process of being replaced... leading to more and more construction in the coming months.

Joplin City Manager Mark Rohr said, "Based on where the landscape was when we finished EDR and that it was so wide open, I frankly think even going and taking a tour of the EDR area that it's filled in nicely. And more of that will happen as these permits manifest themselves in actual construction projects."

The city is working to connect residents struggling to rebuild with available resources. That's everything from loans newly available from the usda to other support from 'Rebuild Joplin.'
