Kyle Stanley rallies to win Phoenix Open (AP)

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? For the second straight week, a PGA Tour event ended with Kyle Stanley in tears. This time, they were tears of joy.

Taking advantage of Spencer Levin's final-round meltdown, Stanley rebounded from a devastating loss at Torrey Pines to win the Phoenix Open on Sunday, overcoming an eight-stroke deficit in a comeback as unlikely as his collapse a week ago.

"You go from a very low point to a high point," Stanley said. "I'm not sure I expected to maybe recover this quickly. ... I think the biggest challenge was seeing if I could put last week behind me. I think I did."

Stanley closed with a bogey-free 6-under 65, holing a 4-foot par putt on the par-4 18th to finish at 15-under 269 ? a stroke ahead of playing partner Ben Crane and two ahead of Levin.

Levin, six strokes ahead entering the round and seven in front after one hole, shot a 75.

"It just wasn't my day, obviously," Levin said. "But I gave it away, simple as that. You have a six-shot lead and lose, you gave it away. My hat's off to Kyle. He played a great round. He went and got it. But if you've got a six-shot lead and don't win, then I think it's on the player with the lead, for sure."

When asked about Levin, Stanley echoed what Torrey Pines winner Brandt Snedeker said about Stanley a week ago.

"I really feel for him, experiencing that," Stanley said. "You don't want to wish that upon anybody. He's a very good player, way too good of a player to not bounce back or recover."

At Torrey Pines, Stanley led by seven shots early in the final round, and still had a four-shot lead as he stood on the tee at the par-5 18th. But his third shot had too much spin and didn't get high enough on the green, spinning down the slope and into the water. He three-putted from 45 feet, then lost to Snedeker on the second playoff hole when his 5-foot par putt caught the right edge of the cup.

"I'm never going to forget that," Stanley said. "But I think it makes this one a lot sweeter, just being able to bounce back. I'm kind of at a loss for words. I'm very grateful for the support I've gotten. It's unbelievable. Unbelievable turnaround."

The 24-year-old former Clemson player from Gig Harbor, Wash., earned $1,098,000 for his first PGA Tour title.

One of the tour's longest hitters at only 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, Stanley birdied the par-5 13th and par-4 14th to take a one-stroke lead at 15 under. On No. 13, he powered a 376-yard drive through the desert area to set up the tying two-putt birdie.

"Got a really good break there. Not quite sure how that ball ended up where it did," Stanley said. "We only hit 9-iron in there."

On 14, he hit a 325-yard drive down the middle and holed a 12-footer to take lead.

"Kind of a chip wedge in there," he said.

Levin, winless on the PGA Tour, birdied the 14th to regain a share of the lead, but followed with a double-bogey 7 on the par-5 15th.

"I wasn't doing trying to do anything different," Levin said "It had to be my mind. You get weird thoughts creeping in here and there. At least, I do. I think it was more my mind than my swing. Just kind of just wanting it a little too much."

On 15, Levin's drive bounced off the cart path on the right and ended up against a cactus in the desert area. He took an awkward stance near the cactus and got the ball back into the second cut just off the fairway with a hockey-style slap with his driver. He emerged with jumping cholla stuck in his shirt and pants, then hit his third shot in the water short and right of the green.

"I pushed it a little bit, but I guess I didn't hit enough club," Levin said. "I thought 4-iron would go over the green and 5-iron didn't carry."

Stanley parred the final three holes, hitting a difficult recovery shot to 20 feet from an awkward angle under cactus to the right of the green on the short par-4 17th.

"It's not a shot you really ever practice," Stanley said. "I had pitching wedge out, Brett (Waldman, his caddie) gave me the sand wedge. Just shut the face and tried to play a little bit of a hook, and it came off perfect."

Playing two groups ahead of Levin, Stanley birdied five of the first 11 holes to get to 13 under, and within three strokes of the faltering leader.

Levin birdied No. 3 to reach 18 under, but bogeyed Nos. 4 and 6 and dropped two more strokes on 11 and 12 to let Stanley into the mix. Stanley, though, wasn't fully aware where he stood.

"I didn't pay much attention to the leaderboards until maybe four or five holes left," Stanley said. "Once I made a couple birdies there on the back nine, I figured I was maybe getting close. But I didn't really think about it too much today.

"I made the mistake of thinking about it probably all of the final round last week. So, this week, I just kind of tried to just let it happen."

DIVOTS: Crane shot a 66. ... Phil Mickelson tied for 26th at 6 under after a 73. "I just couldn't quite get it going," the former Arizona State star said. ... The crowd was announced at 58,447, bringing the seven-day total to 518,262. A tournament-record 173,210 watched play Saturday.

(AP) ? For the second straight week, Colts owner Jim Irsay is trying to put an end to a public spat between him and Peyton Manning.

Irsay said Friday that he and his star quarterback remain "close and unified." The statement included a photo of Manning, Irsay, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and others at a party Thursday night.

At about the same time they were attending that party, Manning's surgeon issued a statement saying he had been cleared to play football.

A couple of hours later, Irsay responded on Twitter by saying that Manning had not been cleared by the team's doctors -- causing yet another stir during Indy's first Super Bowl week being headlined by Manning's younger brother, Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

Romney turns to killer instinct to win Florida

(AP) ? Mitt Romney embraced a killer instinct and leveraged a dominant political machine to crush chief rival Newt Gingrich in Florida's Republican presidential primary.

It was a remarkable turnaround for a candidate who lost big just 10 days earlier in South Carolina.

"I stand ready to lead this party and our nation," a jubilant Romney told cheering supporters Tuesday night in Florida, claiming a resounding victory in a state that rejected his White House bid in 2008.

Romney was beaten down as he came into Florida after Gingrich trounced him in South Carolina. The former House speaker's triumph fueled a wave of momentum that threatened to unite anti-Romney conservatives in Florida and beyond.

Recognizing the threat, Romney had hatched a new strategy even before the South Carolina loss was official.

It would be the end of nice-guy Romney, the man who had usually saved his sharpest barbs for President Barack Obama and let his allies run the attack ads. From the start of the Florida campaign, voters here witnessed Romney's new go-for-the-jugular approach on their television sets, debate stages, and even at Gingrich's campaign stops.

"If you're attacked, I'm not going to just sit back," Romney said Tuesday, warning his competitors that the tough guy is here to stay. "I'm going to fight back and fight back hard."

It wasn't just Romney's attack mode ? and efforts to undercut Gingrich's character ? that guided him to victory.

He also was sitting on a ton of cash and had built an extensive statewide campaign, giving him enormous advantages in a massive state with 10 media markets where campaigns often are won on the air.

Romney and his allies ultimately poured roughly $16 million into Florida television advertising. Restore Our Future, the "super" political action committee supporting Romney, began running Florida ads in mid-December. The candidate and the super PAC also launched an aggressive campaign to court absentee and early voters.

Gingrich was overmatched in Florida on all those fronts. He and his allies turned their attention to the state several weeks after Romney's team had begun its work. He hired local staffers just a month before the election. And he never had the money to compete. Gingrich and his allies spent a quarter of Romney's total ? roughly $4 million ? on Florida advertising.

Gingrich's fiery demeanor and Ronald Reagan comparisons turned out to be no match for Romney's behemoth organization and newfound aggression.

The former congressman from Georgia arrived in Florida on Jan. 22 with a head of steam after his South Carolina win.

One day later, he was confident as he took the stage for the first of two debates before Florida's primary.

But so was Romney, who had hired a new debate coach that week.

The first sign of Romney's new strategy came early as he tore into his opponent, a former college professor who had built his candidacy on the strength of his debate performances. Among other things, Romney attacked Gingrich's work for the mortgage giant Freddie Mac, which would soon become a Romney refrain.

"Freddie Mac was paying Speaker Gingrich $1.6 million at the same time Freddie Mac was costing the people of Florida millions upon millions of dollars," Romney said.

Despite that subpar debate performance, Gingrich initially drew thousands of hopeful Republicans to airport hangars and hotel ballrooms across the state. Fearing crowds might threaten public safety, a fire marshal blocked hundreds from entering a packed venue on the Space Coast last week. And for a time, Gingrich clearly believed he would prove that South Carolina wasn't a fluke.

"I predict people power will beat money power," an almost giddy Gingrich told thousands of cheering supporters in Sarasota last week. "If we win the primary next Tuesday I believe I will become the Republican nominee. So, as the nominee, I get to come back to Tampa in August. We'll have a really big rally for that."

The giddiness didn't last long.

That same day, Romney began running a blistering new ad on Florida television stations across the state. It was a first for a Romney campaign that had been content, up to that point, to leave the negative advertising to outside allies. No more.

"While Florida families lost everything in the housing crisis, Newt Gingrich cashed in," the narrator said. "Gingrich resigned from Congress in disgrace. And then cashed in as a D.C. insider."

Gingrich had previously shrugged off questions about his consulting work for Freddie Mac. But Romney wouldn't let Gingrich off the hook in Florida. Two days after the ad began running, Gingrich suffered perhaps his greatest setback on an unlikely stage.

The candidates met Thursday night in Jacksonville for the final debate before the primary.

Romney supporters packed into the auditorium to help win the applause battle. And Romney researchers found a gem among Gingrich's personal investments hours before the debate.

Gingrich walked into a trap when he criticized Romney for investing in funds that include stock from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

"Mr. Speaker, I know that sounds like an enormous revelation, but have you checked your own investments?" Romney asked a stone-faced Gingrich. "You also have investments through mutual funds that also invest in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac."

It was like a punch to the stomach for Gingrich, who needed a strong showing to reclaim the momentum. He was speechless and wouldn't recover that night or in the days that followed.

Florida polls had already started swinging wildly in Romney's favor. And he didn't take his foot off Gingrich's neck.

At a campaign stop the next day, Romney likened Gingrich to Goldilocks, the fairy tale character who complained of the temperature of her porridge. He repeated the jab the next day. And Romney dispatched high-profile surrogates to Gingrich events, ensuring that no attacks would go unanswered in real time.

The strategy produced uncomfortable moments for Gingrich and sometimes clouded his message. Surrounded by reporters and cameras, a Gingrich spokesman forced an argument with a Romney representative, Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz, about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

It was an unusual approach for a campaign that appeared to be in a tailspin.

Gingrich's crowds started to shrink. And the campaign further alienated voters by struggling with the logistics of campaigning in a large state ? often arriving at events 90 minutes late in the campaign's final days.

Romney didn't let up.

The campaign aired a second attack ad four days before the primary featuring an NBC News broadcast from 1997 about Gingrich's ethical problems as the House speaker. The Romney campaign refused to take the ad down after objections from NBC, a dispute that only heightened the ad's exposure.

But Gingrich was defiant until the end.

On Tuesday, he predicted the race would continue for another six months regardless of the Florida results. "Unless Romney drops out earlier," he quipped.

Romney has signaled that he won't back off his aggressive strategy so long as Gingrich is within striking distance, saying, "I'm not going to stand back and allow another candidate to define me."

China says separatists sparked violence in Sichuan (AP)

BEIJING ? Rock-wielding Tibetan separatists who attacked police stations are responsible for sparking last week's deadly violence in Sichuan, the Chinese government said Wednesday in its first detailed account of the unrest.

The government-run China Daily newspaper quoted extensively from a Sichuan government statement that said two Tibetan rioters were killed and 24 police and firefighters were injured in two clashes. The account differs from those of Tibetan support groups outside the country who say police fired on protesters in three separate areas, killing at least six Tibetans.

According to the report, the Sichuan government said the first violence broke out Jan. 23 in Luhuo county when a group of separatists armed with rocks, batons and blades marched along a street shouting 'Tibetan independence' before trying to storm a police station.

It said the rioters attacked police cars, broke the windows of the police station and tried to steal guns from armed police officers.

The paper quoted the government as saying "the officers were forced to take actions to defend themselves according to the law."

"No country governed by law would tolerate such violence directed against police and aimed at separating the country," it said.

By the government's account, 10 officers and firefighters were injured and one rioter was killed in the first incident.

The next day in Sichuan's Seda county, it said, another group attacked a police station with molotov cocktails. It said one rioter was killed "after the police fought back." The report didn't say if police opened fire.

"Evidence shows that the violent attacks ... were long plotted by separatist forces," the paper quoted the government as saying.

The article also said separatists have been trying to stir up unrest in the area and have "asked and encouraged monks to commit suicide by self-immolation."

For the past year, self-immolations have become a striking form of protest in the region. At least 16 monks, nuns and former clergy set themselves on fire after chanting for Tibetan freedom and the return of the Dalai Lama, who fled to India amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

This is the region's most violent period since 2008, when deadly rioting in Tibet's capital, Lhasa, spread to Tibetan areas in adjoining provinces. China responded by flooding the area with troops and closing Tibetan regions entirely to foreigners for about a year. Special permission is still required for non-Chinese visitors to Tibet, and the Himalayan region remains closed off entirely for the weeks surrounding the March 14 anniversary of the riots that left 22 people dead.

UN Secretary-General warns Senegal (AP)

DAKAR, Senegal ? United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon issued a warning to Senegal, saying in a statement from New York that he is concerned about the uptick of violence and urges its political parties to refrain from violence.

The normally quiet nation of Senegal has been rattled by protests since Friday when the country's constitutional court validated the candidacy of President Abdoulaye Wade, who is seeking a third term in next month's election. The constitution was revised in 2001 in order to impose a two-term limit.

Four people have been killed in the protests, including a policeman who was stoned to death by demonstrators.

Ban said authorities "must act in a manner that preserves and consolidates Senegal's democratic traditions."

Marine gets jail time, reduced rank in hazing case (AP)

KANEOHE BAY, Hawaii ? A Hawaii-based Marine lance corporal accused of hazing in Afghanistan is going to jail for 30 days and will have his rank reduced to private first class for punching and kicking a fellow Marine who killed himself shortly afterward.

Navy Capt. Carrie Stephens, the judge in Lance Cpl. Jacob Jacoby's special court-martial, handed down the sentence after Jacoby, 21, pleaded guilty to assault.

The Marine admitted he punched and kicked Lance Cpl. Harry Lew of Santa Clara, Calif. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors withdrew charges that Jacoby humiliated and threatened Lew.

Stephens said she found no evidence that Jacoby's abuse of Lew caused Lew to kill himself, and she didn't take the suicide into account when determining the sentence.

Two other Marines have also been accused of hazing Lew and face courts-martial.

Jacoby said he acted out of anger and frustration that his fellow Marine had repeatedly fallen asleep while on watch for Taliban fighters.

He told the court he wanted to talk to Lew, to find out why he kept falling asleep, and to help him stay awake. But Jacoby said he got angry when Lew spoke to him in a disrespectful manner, even though Lew was putting the lives of the Marines at their patrol base in danger by dozing off.

Before sentencing, Jacoby said he was sorry and that he wanted to take responsibility for his actions.

"I allowed my emotions and frustrations to get the best of me, and acted out against a fellow Marine," Jacoby said.

He said he will never forget the pain and humiliation of being court-martialed, and believes he can use his experience to help other Marines.

Marine Capt. Jesse Schweig said the government was confident Jacoby is capable of rehabilitating himself.

But Schweig asked the judge to sentence Jacoby with an eye on deterring similar behavior. He said Jacoby should be given a bad conduct discharge.

"If this is how you're going to approach and motivate your peers, then you do not need to be a part of the service," Schweig said in closing remarks at the sentencing hearing.

Navy Lt. John Battisi, Jacoby's attorney, said Jacoby lost his temper and struck Lew ? but argued Jacoby made sure to hit Lew on his body armor where he was best protected.

He also asked the judge to keep in mind the circumstances the Marines were in, and that the chain of command hadn't addressed Lew's sleeping problem and instead had left the issue in Jacoby's hands that night.

"We're asking him to control his emotions and gain emotional maturity in the heat of battle," Battisi said in his closing remarks.

Lew committed suicide April 3 at a patrol base in Helmand province, shortly after the abuse. The 21-year-old was a nephew of U.S. Rep. Judy Chu.

Two other Marines also are accused of hazing Lew before he shot himself with his machine gun in his foxhole. Sgt. Benjamin Johns, the leader of the squad the Marines belonged to, and Lance Cpl. Carlos Orozco III will have their own separate courts-martial later.

Both Marines watched the court proceedings Monday.

Lew's father, Allen Lew, testified during the sentencing hearing that his son wanted to join the Marines because he felt it was "the best."

He said was shocked to hear about his son's death, and his legs buckled when Marines came to his house at 7:30 a.m. with the news in April.

"My son died ? I have only one son," Lew said. He said he doesn't understand how Marines could do the things they did to their own.

Chu, D-Calif., attended the hearing. "I want to make sure that there is justice for Harry. And I want to support these brave persons, his parents," she told reporters beforehand.

The attorney representing Johns said he was concerned the presence of a politician will taint the process and interfere with justice.

"How do I get a fair jury? What implicit message is she trying to send to those panel members?" said Tim Bilecki, a defense attorney who specializes in military clients.

Chu said that wouldn't be the case. "I'm not going to be saying anything in the trial. All I'm doing is being here. I'm here for the family to support them," she said.

The case involves the actions of Marines at an isolated patrol base the U.S. was establishing to disrupt Taliban drug and weapons trafficking in Helmand province.

Squad members and officers had tried different methods to get him to stay awake, including referring him up the chain of command for discipline and taking him off patrols so he could get more rest.

But on Lew's last night, when he fell asleep again, those efforts escalated into alleged acts of violence and humiliation, according to the charges. The Marines were accused of punching and kicking him, making him do push-ups and pouring sand in his face.

A central issue in the case has been whether the Marines intended to humiliate and harm Lew or discipline him so he would stop falling asleep while on watch duty.

Before Lew put the muzzle of his machine gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger, he scrawled a note on his arm: "May hate me now, but in the long run this was the right choice I'm sorry my mom deserves the truth.
