You idea sounds Amazing and totally original, so i would love to try it out if there are still positions open. Well, I was really hoping for a Shinzo, and if there is anyway I could be one I would be so glad. If not, I would love to reserve a human spot. I do both girls and boys, but if a girl is fine that'll be great.

Utah Jazz notes: Alec Burks enjoying crazy dream of life in NBA

Denver ? Alec Burks used one word to capture all his feelings and emotions: crazy.

A year ago, Burks was a sleek, athletic guard for the Colorado Buffaloes. Now he?s a backup wing for the Jazz.

The No. 12 overall pick of the 2011 NBA Draft played six scoreless minutes Tuesday in Utah?s 2011-12 season opener, recording two assists and one rebound in a blowout road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

He then spent pregame warmups Wednesday working out on the same Pepsi Center floor that friend and ex-Denver guard Chauncey Billups once roamed.

It?s been a long, crazy trip for the 20-year-old Burks. And it?s only just begun.

?I could be in school right now ? Christmas break, really,? said Burks, prior to tipoff Wednesday night against the Nuggets. ?It?s a great feeling. I?m living my dream out right now.?

Burks is still devoted to the Buffaloes. So are his friends. Where most NBA players are hounded for ticket requests whenever they make their rookie debut in a once-familiar state, Burks expected few well-known faces to show up Wednesday.

Why? The Buffaloes were hosting New Orleans in nearby Boulder, Colo.

Story continues below

?I?d rather them support the Colorado team,? Burks said.

Young fouls

Just because 20-year-old power forward Derrick Favors made his second consecutive start Wednesday doesn?t mean he?s fully NBA-ready.

Favors has wowed everyone from Jazz coaches to fans with his potential and rightfully earned his spot in Utah?s first unit. But foul trouble still plagues the second-year stud.

He recorded four fouls in 19 minutes against the Lakers, and two of the penalties came in the game?s first 7 minutes.

?He?s going to learn. He?s a young guy,? coach Tyrone Corbin said. ?He?s got to learn the referees. He?s got to learn when he can be aggressive. I like the fact that he [goes] after the ball. He makes some fouls ? they?re young fouls.?

Oil price above $101 as consumer confidence rises

The price of oil climbed above $101 a barrel in light holiday trading on growing U.S. consumer confidence and tension in the Middle East.

Benchmark crude rose $1.66 on Tuesday to end at $101.34 per barrel in New York. Brent crude rose $1.31 to finish at $109.27 per barrel in London.

Prices have risen in the past week as encouraging U.S. economic news pointed to stronger future demand. The New York-based Conference Board said its Consumer Confidence Index jumped almost 10 points from November, to 64.5. That level hasn't been seen since April and was near a post-recession peak.

Higher confidence is in line with retail reports of a decent holiday shopping season. Retailers saw a surge of shopping the week before Christmas, and the National Retail Federation now expects a 3.8 percent increase in holiday sales, up from its a forecast of 2.8 percent in September.

Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of the U.S. economy, so more spending could boost growth and demand for oil. Consumers have cut back in recent years because of uncertainty about the economy, fed by a weak jobs market and a stagnant housing sector. Gasoline demand has been steadily declining since spring.

Tensions in the Middle East also boosted oil prices. Iran has threatened to block oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the busiest routes for crude shipments, if the West tries to embargo Iran's oil exports. The Iranian navy currently is conducting exercises in the region. About a third of the world's oil passes through the narrow strait. The U.S., The U.K. and other nations have talked about more sanctions against Iran as part of an effort to clamp down on its nuclear program.

Iran is the world's fourth largest oil producer, according to the Energy Department. Much of its oil is sold to customers in Asia. If tankers could not use the Strait of Hormuz, they would have to take longer, more expensive routes to their destinations.

Meanwhile, average retail gasoline prices in the U.S. were unchanged from Monday at a national average of $3.23 per gallon.

In other energy trading in New York, natural gas was virtually unchanged at $3.1120 per 1,000 cubic feet. Heating oil rose 2 cents to finish at $2.9085 a gallon, and gasoline futures were flat at $2.6888 a gallon.

Why Google Just Can't Quit the Muppets

It?s no longer news when the company that once famously refused to run commercials does so ? another sign of conventionality in the company that?promised not to be conventional?? but it is still rare enough to be worthy of analysis.

Above is the Google holiday commercial, where the Muppets do a Google+ Hangout.

You get a sense of Google?s strategic priorities by seeing that it?s spending millions to promote Google+. The war for personal information is crucial to Google, and it?s the impetus behind Google+, as I?ve written?here. Further information comes in a follow-up interview with?Bradley Horowitz,?a co-leader of the project.

You get a sense of what works well in Google+ by noting that the focus of the ad is?Hangouts, a relatively late addition to Google+ that has helped hone its purpose. It?s a cool feature, but also makes a statement: This product is about what?s happening now. Google is well-placed to be a leader in real-time presence, and merging group chat into a social experience has been a win.

But there?s another message, too. You get a sense of Google?s culture ? and who the people of Google are ? by the choice of the?Muppets?as the stars of the commercial. Muppets are central to the lives of Googlers. The vast majority of Googlers are people in their twenties and thirties who have completed the perilous obstacle course of the meritocracy, probably starting when their ambitious parents plucked them in front of the telly to absorb the lessons of Big Bird and Count Von Count. (My bet is that many of those parents were otherwise parsimonious with tube time.) Along with the lessons, they bonded with the puppets, much as toddlers get fixated on blankies and stuffed animals.

As a result, even the most math-geeky Googlers kind of melt at the sight of Miss Piggy. It?s not even too much of a stretch to claim that the do-goody ethic of Sesame Street was the forerunner of Don?t Be Evil.

The Muppets keep popping up at the Googleplex. Google?s very first paid employee, Craig Silverstein, was the founder of the internet group??rec.arts.henson+muppets

One of the languages included in?Google?s translation program?is the weird (?bork, bork, pork!?) pidgin of the Swedish Chef from the Muppets Show.

According to Doug Edwards (in his memoir?I?m Feeling Lucky)?in Google?s early days, the most important chart on the internal web site was the measure of search quality of various engines. Each line on the chart (representing the effectiveness of a given company in delivering results) was labeled by a Muppet character. Google?s label for itself was ?The Great Gonzo.?

How Google Could Sort Out The Android Update Mess

  • DefaultHow Google Could Sort Out The Android Update Mess

Only one company can save Android users from years more of update hell ? Google.

There?s no doubt that when it comes to updates, the Android platform is in a mess. While this mess doesn?t seem to be throwing the brakes on activations, it does mean that existing Android users are being screwed out of the ability to run the latest version of Google?s mobile OS. The topic has really been brought to light with the release of Android 4.0. Since ICS is such a major advance in Android technology, all Android users want it for their device.
Why is the Android update situation such a fiasco? Opinions vary. Some believe that it?s all about the money, while others see it as a business model problem. Some tend to think that it?s a mixture of both issues. Money, of course, comes into the equation, but the business model factors of binding contracts and subsidized handsets compounds the problem. I personally believe that Android has grown at such a fast rate, that details like this weren't fully thought out.
    But who can solve this update problem? Only one company can save Android users from years more of update hell ? Google. So, how can Google fix this mess? Is it by tightly controlling the handset hardware like Microsoft and Apple currently does? Or is it by adopting virtualization, like some experts suggest? No, it?s far simpler than that. Google needs to market OS updatability as a key selling feature of its Nexus line of handsets. Furthermore, Google needs to guarantee that all Nexus handsets will be upgradable to the next major Android release. Doing this would accomplish two things;
#1 : It would give people who want an easy route to upgrading an easy choice when it came to choosing an Android handset.
#2 : This move would put pressure on other hardware manufacturers to follow suit.
To make this work Google would need to do several things:
    * Streamline the highly-complex update process, possibly by adopting virtualization
    * Publish a minimum hardware spec that handset makers must follow
    * Cut carriers out of the equation, or at least sideline them (like Apple has done with iOS), and possibly go as far as cutting the hardware makers out too (like Microsoft has done with Windows Phone)
    * Discourage handset makers from locking bootloaders, thus encouraging the dev community and homebrew projects
    * Discourage carrier branding and crapware (after all, all that bloatware isn?t helping make Android handsets any safer)
Some have have even suggested that paid updates would fix the problem, but I think that even though there are users who would gladly pay to have the most current software on their devices as soon as it was available, in general most Android users would reject the idea, and it would hurt Android in the long run. So, what do you guys think? What do you think Google could / should do to fix the problems with updates?

    Default

I agree with what you're saying, but I would add that an "official" Google OS (and updates) would be stock Android only (the "With Google" tag). Work with OEMs (and even carriers) to release Google-only phones (Nexus, OG etc) but also (to keep the carriers happy) release the open source version of Android without any Google apps. That way the OEM and\or carrier can do whatever the hell they want to do with the OS, and they officially (and legally) take ownership of support and maintenance.

The "With Google" phones, on the other hand, would all be treated like Nexus phones. These phones would cross all carriers, devs would love them, the advanced user community would love them, and the "official" Android stats would belong in this category.

Analysis: Caution mutes US response to NKorea (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration's cautious response to the death of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il reflects unease and uncertainty about the leadership transition in the reclusive country that has confounded U.S. presidents since Harry S. Truman.

For the past 60 years, the "hermit kingdom" has vexed the United States and its allies with war, nuclear tests, missile launches, belligerence and bellicose bombast. But since he took office, President Barack Obama has had to deal with the country at perhaps its most secretive point: an unclear succession at the very top at a time of deep concern about the stability of the regime.

Thus, the administration's carefully worded public messages have underscored the administration's desire for better relations with the autocratic nation and its concern about the welfare of the North Korean people. They are also gentle reminders that Washington expects Pyongyang to follow through on denuclearization pledges and improve ties with its neighbors, particularly South Korea.

The kid gloves treatment accorded to the North's youthful new leader, Kim's twenty-something son Kim Jong Un, has attracted criticism from some who see this is a moment to make a forceful case for dramatic reform and regime change.

But without solid intelligence of the opaque transition process and fearful of misunderstandings that could lead to provocations with the notoriously erratic North, U.S. officials concluded that the best course is to say little, wait and watch.

Indeed, the administration's initial reactions to Kim's death have contained little substance at all and were couched in niceties.

"All I can say is that we're monitoring the situation closely," White House press secretary Jay Carney said on Wednesday as North Korean state media broadcast pictures of wailing mourners, apparently overcome with grief. "Kim Jong Il had designated Kim Jong Un as his official successor, and at this time we have no indication that that has changed."

Carney added: "We hope that the new North Korean leadership will take the steps necessary to support peace, prosperity and a better future for the North Korean people, including through acting on its commitments to denuclearization."

Those comments echoed words from Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. On Monday, more than 16 hours after Kim's death was announced, she was the first senior U.S. official to comment publicly on the developments. In intentionally vague comments, she called for "a peaceful and stable transition in North Korea" and expressed hope that it would not affect "regional peace and stability."

Ironically, it was Clinton who first stirred the pot about a possible succession crisis in North Korea.

Nearly three years ago, on her first trip to Asia as secretary of state, she stunned diplomatic circles with a frank appraisal of U.S. concerns amid rampant speculation about the health of Kim Jong Il, who had suffered a stroke in 2008, and his choice of a successor.

"If there is a succession, even if it's a peaceful succession, that creates more uncertainty and it also may encourage behaviors that are even more provocative as a way to consolidate power within the society," Clinton told reporters on her way to South Korea on Feb. 20, 2009.

Her remarks on a previously taboo subject sparked great debate. In Seoul the next day, she expressed surprise at the uproar, noting that reports of Kim choosing his youngest son Kim Jung Un to succeed him had "been in the news for months."

"I don't think that it's a forbidden subject to talk about succession in the hermit kingdom," Clinton said. "In fact, it seems to me it's got to be factored into any policy review that one is undertaking. ... I think it would be irresponsible for it not to be factored into what you were thinking about."

That same month, U.S. diplomats were scrambling to collect any information they could about Kim Jong Un from South Korean, Chinese and Japanese officials and experts, according to leaked State Department cables published by WikiLeaks.

Unfortunately for the Americans, their interlocutors had sharply divided opinions, according to the cables. Some predicted the North Korean regime would collapse politically within two to three years of Kim Jong Il's death. Others foresaw a power struggle between the young and untested Kim Jong Un and rivals in the elite but differed over who would prevail. Others believed there would be little change.

One apparent area of convergence, however, was that most South Korean experts believed the challenge for the younger Kim would come after his father's death.

Thus, as North Korea's transition is under way, the lack of clarity has put U.S. policy on hold.

Before Kim's passing, the administration had been expected this week to announce the resumption in food aid to North Korea and a potential bilateral meeting on nuclear disarmament. Although the State Department said there had been brief exchange with North Korean officials in New York on Monday, both initiatives are now in flux pending the end of the North's mourning period.

The administration says it is respecting that mourning period by understanding that North Korean officials will not be available for discussions. Yet it has steadfastly refused to express any sympathy for the death of Kim, whose Stalinist regime is accused of having one of the worst, if not the worst, human rights records in the world.

While showering the late Czech democracy leader Vaclev Havel with effusive eulogies, American officials have refused to even utter the word "condolence" in relation to Kim.

"With regard to the C-word," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Tuesday, "I think we didn't consider it appropriate in this case."

Two Maine Communities Receive $50,000 Creative Community Development Grants

Two Maine Communities Receive $50,000 Creative Community Development Grants

Augusta, ME ? The Maine Arts Commission announced today that the cities of Belfast and Waterville will each receive grants of $50,000 in order to effect community revitalization in their region.

The grants, designed to support dialogue and partnership between municipalities, business and the cultural sector regarding economic development, have been awarded through the Maine Arts Commission?s Creative Communities = Economic Development Grant (CCED).

The CCED grant fosters meaningfully support, dialogue and partnerships between municipalities and the cultural sector. It provides the cultural sector with significant funds to contribute to mutually agreed upon plans and initiatives that stimulate the local economy, provide jobs, strengthen the role of arts and culture, and enhance a community?s quality of place.

The Belfast Creative Coalition will use the grant funding to to bring together arts, cultural partners and economic partners to brand and market the greater Belfast community as a place to be for vibrant arts, culture and local foods.
The coalition seeks to hire an administrative coordinator who will be responsible for centralizing community resources and maximizing the synergy within the region in order to strategically allocate resources. The administrator will work on developing a regional cultural events calendar, an interactive website, the coordination of programming and events, consistent regional marketing and branding, fundraising, and a whole host of additional tasks to ensure cultural and economic vibrancy in the area.

?Over the last twenty years, the growth of cultural activities in our area has been amazing, but with very little coordination,? said Waterfall Arts Programming Director, Martha Piscuskas.? ?Waterfall Arts, The City of Belfast, Our Town Belfast and many other organizations and individuals believe the time is right to take our very active creative sector to the next level.? Instead of everyone fending for themselves, we'll coordinate schedules, share resources, collaborate on promotions and work strategically to sustain our vibrant community into the next several decades.?

In Waterville the CCED Grant will support the citys new Converge & Create brand through asset based marketing, incentives for artist, creative business attraction, and new cooperative programming. Waterville Main Street, working together with the City of Waterville, the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce, the Colby College Museum of Art, the Waterville Public Library, and the Waterville Arts Council have come together to oversee the design and implementation of a brand-integrated, comprehensive, coordinated marketing strategy for Waterville?s community-wide arts and cultural assets.

Projects in Waterville will include the marketing of existing cultural assets, the development of a pilot cooperative downtown arts venue and the devlopment of incentives for recruiting artists and creative businesses to Downtown Waterville.

?Waterville is poised to become a destination for arts and creative opportunities in Maine, and the support of the CCED grant will help us to realize these exciting goals,? said Sharon Corwin, director and chief curator of Colby College Museum of Art. ?Enthusiasm and support from members throughout our community, including the Colby College Museum of Art, is exceptionally strong and speaks to a shared vision for Waterville as leader in the state for creative communities.? We are thrilled that Waterville has been selected to receive this important support.?

Belfast and Waterville clearly demonstrated to a panel of experts which included Barbara Schaeffer Bacon of Americans for the Arts, Peter Taylor of the Maine Community Foundation, Carol Geist of the Betterment Fund, Deborah Johnson of the Department of Economic and Community Development, Betsy Rosenbluth of the Orton Family Foundation, Megan Shore, Sewell Foundation, Hugh French, Maine Arts Commission Member and John Rohman, former chair, Maine Arts Commission, that they were at a point where their communities are clearly on a path toward economic recovery and growth. Both communities exhibited a clear understanding of the importance arts and culture in that equation. The Maine Arts Commission will be working closely with both communities over the next year to monitor and assist with the implementation of the goals of the grant.

The Maine Arts Commission?s CCED Grants are awarded annually and delivered to two or more nonprofit cultural organizations within a geographic community or region. Applications are sought from communities/regions with a strong commitment to cross-sector collaboration that seeks to strengthen the cultural assets of their community. Animoog debuts DIY synth studio for iPhone 4, BYO talent (video)

Hey kids, if you never thought you'd live to see the day that Animoog offered up its wares for your iPhone, then prepare to be dazzled. Previously available only for the iPad, Moog has successfully re-tooled its impressive synthesizer software for the smaller screen and has maintained the same powerful features as before. Based on Moog's Anisotropic Synth Engine, the app leverages multitouch input, which allows users to play a chord and then modulate each note independently from one another. With a wide array of timbre styles, polyphonic modulation and pitch shifting, the software even supports MIDI input for those looking to link Animoog with a more traditional synth keyboard. Available right now in the App Store for 99¢, the software will leap to a full $9.99 after its introductory period. So, if you're rocking an iPhone 4 / 4S, it seems wise to jump on this deal while it's nice and cheap. There's a full video after the break, for those looking to see Animoog's recital performance.

Indonesia girl back with family after 2004 tsunami (AP)

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia ? A girl who was swept away in the Indian Ocean tsunami seven years ago said Friday she broke down in tears this week after tracking down her parents, who had long lost hope of finding her alive.

The 15-year-old showed up in Aceh province's hard-hit town of Meulaboh earlier this week, saying that not long after the wave hit she was "adopted" by a woman who called her Wati and forced her to beg, sometimes beating her and keeping her in the streets until 1 a.m.

When the teen stopped bringing in money, she was told, "Go ahead, leave ... go find your parents then, they're in Meulaboh."

With only patchy memories about her past ? she was only 8 when the tsunami hit, an age where most children don't know their relatives' full names ? Wati began her search, telling people she thought her grandfather was "Ibrahim."

She met a pedicab driver in Meulaboh, who brought her to a man by that name. Though she didn't look familiar, he, in turn, quickly summoned her parents.

"When I saw my mother, I knew it was her," said the wide-eyed girl, her hair cropped close to her head. "I just knew."

The family, who say the girl's original name is Meri Yuranda, is also now convinced.

The Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen nations hit Aceh ? closest to the epicenter of the magnitude-9.1 quake that spawned the towering waves ? the hardest.

With tens of thousands of bodies washed to sea in that province alone, many families continue to cling to hope of finding lost loved ones. Reunions, however, are rare. And all announced in the last five years have turned out to be untrue. Even so, some mothers continue to believe a child is theirs even after DNA tests prove otherwise.

Either way, without any challenges to the claims, Wati now has a family.

Yusniar binti Ibrahim Nur, the mother, told The Associated Press she had all the evidence she needed.

"She has her father's face," the 35-year-old woman said by telephone. "And when I saw the scar over her eye and mole on her hip, I was even more sure."

It doesn't worry her, she said, that the girl and her husband have different accounts of what happened on the day the tsunami hit their tiny village of Ujong Baroh just outside of Meulaboh.

Wati remembers her father putting her into a boat with her younger sister, long presumed dead as well, and then getting separated. She says she remembers being surrounded by water and crying.

Her father says he put both of his daughters on the roof of their house hoping they'd be safe.

"Maybe she fell into the boat, maybe someone helped her. I just don't know," said Yusniar.

"I just thank God my prayers have been answered," she said. "For years, I searched everywhere. I'd really given up."

HP Envy Spectre arrives at FCC, next year's model probably called HP Envy SMERSH

Even in the FCC's secret Washington bunker, our boys in lab-coats like to spread a little festive cheer. When this new HP Envy 14 Spectre was released into the streets, we found it wrapped in tinsel. We'll expect to learn more about this dual-band Wireless-N packing laptop in January, where we figure it'll be the last model to carry Intel's Sandy Bridge, since successor Ivy Bridge isn't due to arrive at OEMs for another couple of months. We're not sure about naming your laptop after a James Bond villain organization, but it wouldn't be the first questionable decision to come from the House of Meg this year, would it?

Pros see stocks up in 2012, but big risks, too (AP)

NEW YORK ? The good news is that Wall Street experts think stock prices will rise more than 10 percent next year. The bad news is that they expected big gains in 2011 and got nearly zero instead.

It's forecasting time on Wall Street, and once again the pros are trying to predict the unpredictable. History suggests their target price for stocks by the end of 2012 will prove too high or too low. They might even get the direction wrong ? predicting a gain when there's a loss.

As Yogi Berra said, "It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future."

In typical times, guessing where stocks will end up in a year is difficult. There are many assumptions about economic growth, inflation and consumer spending that go into the calculation.

Now, forecasting has become nearly impossible. Big unknowns hang over the market as rarely before. Will the euro break up? Will China slow too sharply? Will squabbling in Washington scuttle the economic recovery?

"Normally, you wonder, How will sales do? How are managements doing?" says Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at Standard & Poor's, which puts out its own forecasts. "Now there are so many high-level issues that affect the market."

Silverblatt's firm says the S&P 500 index should rise to 1,400 by the end of 2012, up more than 10 percent from Friday's close of 1,265. That figure is an average of expectations from investment strategists, economists and other big thinkers. More bullish yet are stock analysts focused on individual companies. Add up their price targets for each stock in the index, and they see it rising to 1,457, up 15 percent.

There's plenty of reason to think stocks will rise fast in the coming year. U.S. companies are generating record profits. Americans are spending more than expected and factories are producing more. The job market finally appears to be healing, too.

The odds of the U.S. slipping into another recession have fallen since the summer, when the economy had slowed.

Stocks seem attractively priced, too. The S&P 500 is trading at 12 times its expected earnings per share for 2012. It typically trades at 15 times, meaning stocks appear cheaper now.

Binky Chadha, chief strategist at Deutsche Bank, says the S&P 500 could hit 1,500 by the end of 2012, a gain of more than 18 percent.

Still, there is worry amid the bullishness.

Michael Hartnett, chief global equity strategist at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, expects the S&P to close next year at 1,350, up 6.7 percent from Friday's close. He thinks the U.S. will avoid recession and U.S. companies will generate decent profits.

What could wreck that prediction is a worse situation in Europe than he is expecting. If European leaders move too slowly to solve their government debt crisis, the region could fall into a deep recession and throw the U.S. into one, too. If Europe tanks, profits will drop sharply and push the S&P down to 1,000, he says. That would be a sharp drop of 21 percent from Friday's close.

The frightening part is that Hartnett gives this "bear" case four-in-10 odds.

Similarly, Barry Knapp, strategist at Barclays Capital, predicts the S&P will rise to 1,330 next year. But he expects Europe's struggles with its debt and Washington gridlock could lead investors to sell before they buy. He says the S&P could fall to 1,150 by the middle of the year before rising to his target.

It could drop sooner. In the first three months next year, Italy needs to sell national bonds to raise money to pay holders of $172 billion worth of old ones coming due. The risk is that investors will demand high interest rates to buy the new bonds, and that will spread fears of a possible default. After Italy was forced to pay unexpectedly high rates in a bond auction earlier this month, stocks fell hard around the world.

"The crisis could become systemic," says Athanasios Vamvakidis, head European currency strategist at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch. "That would threaten not only Europe, but the whole global recovery."

One solution is to invest in companies selling goods that people need in both good times and bad, such as drugs and food. If the economy falls into recession, profits of these companies are less likely to collapse.

In 2011, these so-called defensive companies bucked the flat market. Stocks of utility companies have risen almost 15 percent through Friday. Healthcare and consumer staples were each up 10. Standouts include insurer UnitedHealth Group Inc., which has risen 42 percent, and Kraft Foods, up almost 20 percent.

Then again, you might do better investing in the opposite kind of companies, like makers of toys and other consumer discretionary goods. Their profits tend to zoom up and down with the economy.

A report from S&P Capital IQ notes that stocks of cyclical companies such as these tend to gain the most after market drops like the one in October, when stocks fell nearly 20 percent.

In the five times that the S&P 500 has fallen between 15 percent and 25 percent since 1978, consumer discretionary stocks have risen an average 30 percent in the next six months, according to S&P. Those stocks are up 16 percent since their Oct. 3 lows.

One reason it's difficult to guess future stock prices is that figuring out where the economy is heading isn't so easy either.

In December 2007, economists expected the economy to grow an average 2.4 percent in 2008, according to a survey of three dozen of them by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. It shrank 0.3 percent instead. For 2009, they forecast the economy would shrink 0.8 percent. It shrank 3.5 percent.

Economists were more accurate the next two years, though not by much. Now they say the economy will grow 2.2 percent next year.

A few mutual fund managers say people aren't skeptical enough about forecasts. In a recent letter to their investors, the folks who run Castle Focus, a $43 million fund, say hopes of big profits may be dashed given all the economic uncertainty. The fund had 28 percent of its assets in cash in September, its latest report.

Most funds are doing the opposite and investing cash. The average stock mutual fund had just 3.5 percent of its assets in cash in October, according to a report from the Investment Company Institute. That is the nearly the lowest level since the firm started keeping records 25 years ago.

Maybe fund managers have been listening too much to bullish stock analysts. For the record, the same analysts surveyed by S&P who expect a 16 percent stock jump next year were optimistic about 2011, too. A year ago, they called for the S&P to rise 9 percent.

It still may, but the odds are long and time is running out. As of Friday, the index was up 0.6 percent for the year.

Nokia responds to questions over Symbian name swap

Nokia's seems to have finally realized that it can't just kill off a long-standing name like Symbian with a mere three-word mention (in parentheses) on its official blog. It's now posted up a marginally more detailed statement in response to "heaps of questions" from Nokia fans about the name change, and it reads as follows:

"We are still using Symbian Belle with some audiences like developers but now we also have the flexibility of using Nokia Belle when referring to our greatest and latest Symbian software update."

There, that should clear it up. Or maybe not. The idea of switching between different names for the same product might be considered bad branding, and the notion of developers being an "audience" is confusing too. But what more can you expect from a single sentence? In other news, the update also clarified that Nokia/Symbian Belle will be coming to the Nokia 500, along with the devices mentioned yesterday, and that it's delay until February 2012 was due to this being a "major software update" that will "make such a big difference in the user experience."
